Description

Zamioculcas Zamiifolia, more commonly known as the “ZZ Plant” is a member of the Araceae family. This plant continues to gain popularity in homes and offices mainly for its low maintenance care requirements – the ZZ plant tolerates low light levels and has very low water needs. The ZZ plant also stands out for its spectacularly glossy, thick green leaves that fan out from the plant on succulent stems.

The ZZ plant has rhizomatous roots, which resemble potatoes, are sometimes partially visible above the soils surface. This plant originates from eastern and central Africa, and its rhizomatous roots and succulent stems and leaves enable it to survive for extended periods without water.

The ZZ plant is extremely versatile when it comes to light requirements, and can be grown in low, medium, or bright indirect light. Medium to bright indirect light will promote faster growth, and is preferred by some growers, as ZZ plants are slow growing by nature. In lower light settings, the plant will be slower to grow, but its leaves will remain a darker green. Avoid bright direct sunlight which can burn the ZZ plant.

The ZZ plant has very low water needs due to its rhizomatous roots and succulent leaves and stems. Because its water requirements are much lower than traditional houseplants, take extra care not to over water your ZZ.

As this plant stores its own water throughout its roots, leaves, and stems, it needs to be allowed to completely dry out between watering. Sitting in water will cause the roots and rhizomes of this plant to rot. Because of the amount of water the ZZ plant stores on its own, forgetting to water the plant occasionally is not a bad thing, and is in fact a natural occurrence which this plant is equipped for.

Amending standard, well-draining potting soil with perlite will provide better drainage and root aeration for your ZZ plant
