Description
Mutana Hill is a small area located above 1900 meters in the Northern Province of Kayanza. Coffee from this particular hillside is brought to the Heza Washing Station along with the coffee of over 4500 farmers from other surrounding areas. The washing station was built by our partners, Long Miles Coffee Project in an effort to improve coffee quality, facilitate direct connections between farmers and roasters, and improve the livelihood of local coffee farmers. Their agricultural extension work also includes agronomists on staff and a "Coffee Scouts" youth program. This program provides training as well as employment opportunities for youth to engage in pruning trees and combating the dreaded Antesia beetle, which is responsible for the "potato defect" found in many Burundian and Rwandan coffees. Flavors of orange, stone fruit, dark chocolate abound in the cup.
